Guide — Tracing a Claim Back
Three stages sit between a careful conclusion and a confident label, and the claim gets firmer at each one. None of them requires anybody to lie, which is exactly why the process is so reliable.
Existence Doubtful
Old charts carried small abbreviations beside uncertain features. P.D. for position doubtful. E.D. for existence doubtful. Rep. for reported but unverified. A navigator could see at a glance how much the mapmaker was actually claiming, and the qualifier travelled with the feature through every reprint that kept it.
Scientific papers have the same apparatus. Researchers write that a finding suggests, or that two things are associated, or that an effect may occur in some patients. Those words are chosen with care, and a conclusion section is often noticeably more cautious than the abstract above it.
Then the qualifier comes off. Research into health news has traced a great deal of the exaggeration not to journalists but to the press releases issued by the researchers’ own institutions — where a cautious association becomes a firm one, and an animal study loses the animal. The headline inherits it, the supplement page inherits the headline, and by the time the claim reaches a product label there is no notation left at all. This guide teaches you to run that chain backwards, which takes about four minutes.

The guide provides a short glossary of these terms and what each is conceding. It also covers where to find the limitations paragraph, which is usually the most informative part of any paper and almost never quoted anywhere else.

This is the least known stage and the most important. Institutions compete for attention and funding, and the release is written to be picked up. The guide explains how to find the original release alongside the paper and read them side by side.
The move to make: when reporting seems overstated, check whether the overstatement started upstream. It very often did, which changes who you should be sceptical of and by how much.
A supplement page citing “research” is frequently four removes from a cautious sentence about cells. The guide shows how to trace back through those removes, and how far most claims actually get before the trail stops.
The move to make: ask what was studied, in whom, and how confident the authors said they were. If a page cannot answer all three, it is not describing evidence. It is describing a headline.
